As many brides will attest to (including our founder’s daughter!) the lovely bridal suite, on the second floor, provides a vantage point to view arriving guests, and a spacious, comfortable spot for the bride to get ready for the big day.

Large glass doors lead from the awe-inspiring main room onto a lovely stone terrace that overlooks the grapevines and saltwater marshes. If you put your ear up to the gingerbread house and listen closely, you can almost hear Long Island Sound in the distance. 😉

We are so proud to announce that we have been named the 2014 Connecticut Caterer of the Year by the CT Restaurant Association (CRA). The award was announced at the CRA Awards Dinner at the Mohegan Sun on Tuesday, December 2, 2014.

We first won the award in 2012, making it two out of three years for us as we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary in business.

“It is always a true joy to win an award like this,” said Linda Sample, our fearless leader. “There are so many wonderful catering companies in Connecticut; to receive this award is a real testament to the A Thyme to Cook team that make it all happen.”

Thank you to everyone who nominated us and then voted for us. Our passion for your events grows ever stronger!

Every wedding is unique. Here at A Thyme to Cook we strive to make sure of that. However, for every little couple-specific touch, there are those tried and true wedding traditions that we see often.

Have you ever wondered where some of these traditions are based? Tossing the bouquet, bridesmaids’ dresses or having a long train – we have a list of ten popular wedding day events and the stories behind them.

1. BEST MAN

The groom’s right-hand man on the big day comes from a time when the groom really needed backup. In ancient times, a prospective groom would invade neighboring villages and literally ‘take’ the woman he wanted for his bride.

Not wanting to go it alone, the future husband of the year would bring the biggest, strongest, ‘best’ man he could find to help fight off the family of his new bride.

In other history, it was popular to attack Brides for luck (more on this below). The Best Man was tasked with escorting the bride down the aisle to protect her.

And we all thought it was just to throw the bachelor party and make a toast!
